Attorney’s Fees

We are often asked how much a divorce costs. There is no simple answer. Cost depends upon the complexity of your case and whether your spouse is unreasonable. A fight over custody, alimony, child support, and visitation against a determined opponent will cost far more than an uncomplicated divorce in which most of the issues have already been worked out.

The other considerations are the reputation and skill of your attorney. As with everything else in life, you get what you pay for. We imagine that few feelings are worse than realizing in the middle of your divorce trial that your lawyer is in over his or her head.

There is no need for you to guess about fees when you can reach out with an email or phone call and learn more. You can also read our Ultimate Guide to Attorney’s Fees to learn more about how it works.

Consultations

We charge $350/hour for initial consultations, and they usually last about an hour. During this time, we will evaluate your case, let you know what you can expect, and develop a game plan for how to efficiently achieve your goals.

You are under no obligation to retain our firm, just as we are under no obligation to take your case. Whether you retain us or not, all consultations are privileged and confidential.

Representation

After you have discussed your case with us during the initial consultation, we will quote a retainer to be paid before we undertake your representation. We will confirm our representation of you in an engagement letter, and each month we will provide you with a written statement of our services.

Flat Fees

Charging a flat fee, in which the client pays the attorney a large fee at the outset of the representation, after which no further payment is required, can be appropriate in the proper circumstance. In nearly all cases that our firm handles, we charge by the hour, as is customarily done in family law cases. You can review the differences between flat fees and hourly rates in our Ultimate Guide to Attorney’s Fees.
